HUNGER IN U.S. PUBLIC SCHOOLS

America's public schools are frought with students who come to school hungry each day and go home either hungry or malnurished. The discussion we want to create revolves around the follow thoughts:

-What does hunger look like in U.S. public schools?
-How does student hunger impact student achievement and learning?
-Can educators and school professionals effectively implement curriculum in the face of student hunger?

This article highlights the short falls of The National Free/Reduced Lunch Program.  The article focuses on the lack of food service during times when school is not in session. It also speculates as why the program is underused. The article suggests an alternative that would allow for more children to receive food during these times.

  • School Meals Makeover Stirs the Pot
This article provides an overview of the recently passed Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.  The article looks at all of the changes that will occur to the school breakfast and lunch programs.  The article provides insight into both sides of the debate.

This is an article lists 12 myths about hunger. For each of the facts, the authors dispel the myth and state true fact in regard to the issue.
